At just over five years old, the Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC), is the newest RCE. Started by a generous grant from the Portland, Maine based Libra Foundation, the MWSC has a mission to re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine and to leverage that lifestyle to create healthier lifestyles and economic opportunity for rural communities of the State. The MWSC has established ski programs in over two dozen community that are getting thousands of children out on skis regularly throughout the winter.
The MWSC has also built two world-class Nordic facilities, including dorms for resident athletes. They provide experienced coaching in biathlon and cross-country skiing from beginner through to those aspiring for spots on National Teams.
It has already played host to an IBU World Cup Biathlon, 3 Junior National Championships, 2 Senior National Championships, 2 North American Championships, and the 2006 IBU Biathlon Junior World Championships in Presque Isle.
This RCE has become an invaluable resource for the development of skiing and biathlon in Maine and for the development and growth of the sport of biathlon in the United States.
