An annual fixture on the training calendar, the National Team, along with members of the X Team, U26 National Development Team, and Project X Program, returned to Lake Placid for the first camp of the 2026-27 training season, June 1-14. In most years, the team opens the summer in Bend, OR, to ease back onto snow after a spring reset before transitioning to roller skis. This year, however, the team opted to forgo that stop and begin the new Olympic cycle with a more gradual return to training.

Training Camp

Based out of the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Lake Placid, the team spent two weeks sharpening both ski and shooting technique at Mt. Van Hoevenberg and the Jumping Complex range. Training also included hiking and biking throughout the Adirondacks, bounding and roller skiing up Whiteface Mountain, and strength sessions in the gym. The training was complimented by time spent together as a team, including a bonfire night hosted by Tim Burke, and a homemade pizza night hosted by Deedra Irwin and her husband, Robby Burns.

New Coaching Structure

June camp also marked the first under U.S. Biathlon’s new coaching structure. Mike Gibson and Emil Bormetti stepped into their roles as Women’s and Men’s National Team Head Coaches, respectively, while Raleigh Goessling joined the staff as Head Development Coach, leading the U26 Development Team along with the X Team and Project X development efforts.

Matt Emmons returned as Head Shooting Coach, and Justin Wadsworth came on board as Head Physiology Coach. Together, they will work closely with athletes across the National Team Program to continue refining shooting execution, ski physiology, and the technical details required to perform at the highest level.
