by Sara Donatello
Midway, UT – U.S. Biathlon announced today the appointment of Justin Wadsworth as Head Physiology Coach. In this newly created role, Wadsworth will provide dedicated support to coaches and athletes through high-level performance planning, technical expertise, and targeted on-the-ground coaching support aimed at optimizing athlete development and race performance.
“I am super excited to be part of a great team working together to take U.S. Biathlon to the next level,” said Wadsworth. “I know most of the coaches and athletes already, so it will be great to hop right in for the first camp of the year in Lake Placid.”
Wadsworth, a three-time Olympian in cross-country skiing, brings decades of international coaching and high performance experience to U.S. Biathlon. A former NCAA All-American at the University of Utah and member of the U.S. World Junior rowing team, Wadsworth has held prominent leadership roles across North American endurance sports, including serving as World Cup coach for the U.S. Cross Country Ski Team from 2006-2010, Head Coach of the Canadian Cross Country Ski Team from 2010-2016, and Head Coach of the Canadian Biathlon Team from 2018-2025. Most recently, he served as Team Lead for the Canadian Cross Country Ski Team at the 2026 World Junior/U23 Championships. Wadsworth resides in Canmore, Alberta with his wife, Olympic champion Beckie Scott, and their two children.
“Justin brings an exceptional depth of high performance experience to our organization,” said U.S. Biathlon President & CEO Jack Gierhart. “His track record of leading endurance sport programs and developing athletes at every level will be a tremendous asset as we continue investing in long-term athlete development and pursuing sustained competitive excellence on the world stage.”
“Justin’s addition is another important step in building the world-class performance environment our athletes need to compete for medals on the biggest stages,” said Lowell Bailey. “Matt Emmons has already transformed the way we approach shooting performance, bringing Olympic champion expertise and proven systems to our program. Justin brings a similarly impressive track record in endurance sport, having helped develop and lead some of the best athletes and teams in the world. Together, they provide a level of technical expertise that few programs can match, while complementing the outstanding work already being done by our coaching staff every day. As we continue our pursuit of the first Olympic medals ever won by American biathletes, building this kind of expertise and support around our athletes will be critical to achieving that goal.”
As part of a broader restructuring of the U.S. Biathlon coaching system, Wadsworth will lead the organization’s high performance training planning and biomechanical efficiency efforts with a focus on enhancing training quality, improving ski speed, and optimizing athlete development trajectories. He will work closely with Women’s National Team Head Coach Mike Gibson, Men’s National Team Head Coach Emil Bormetti, Head Development Coach Raleigh Goessling, Head Shooting Coach Matt Emmons, Junior National Team Head Coach Brian Halligan, and High Performance Director Lowell Bailey to ensure an integrated and cohesive high performance support system across all levels of the program.
