Midway, UT — U.S. Biathlon announced today the appointment of Mike Gibson as Women’s National Team Head Coach.
“I’m incredibly honored and excited to step into the role of Women’s National Team Head Coach for U.S. Biathlon,” said Gibson. “I’m grateful for the trust placed in me and look forward to working alongside an outstanding group of athletes and staff as we continue building toward success on the international stage. This sport and community have given me so much over the years, and I’m excited for the opportunity to help support this next chapter of the program.”
Over the past two seasons, Gibson has led the U.S. Biathlon National Development Team and the men’s and women’s IBU Cup Teams, playing a key role in the progression of developing elite athletes. Bringing more than a decade of experience as both a biathlete and high performance coach, Gibson combines a deep understanding of athlete development with a thoughtful, innovative approach to training and performance. In addition to his coaching background, he is an accomplished mechanical engineer, designer, and inventor.
“Mike has made a tremendous impact across our development and high performance programs,” said U.S. Biathlon President & CEO Jack Gierhart. “His leadership, energy, and athlete-focused approach have been evident from day one, and we are excited to have him leading the Women’s National Team into this next quad.”
“It has been really cool seeing Mike grow into this coaching role through years of hard work and hands on experience with the IBU and U.S. Biathlon,” said 2x Olympian and National Team member Deedra Irwin. “I know he has a lot of exciting ideas for the Women's Team and I look forward to working with him!”
“Mike has shown a tremendous ability to connect with athletes, build strong training environments, and help athletes grow and perform at a high level,” said U.S. Biathlon High Performance Director Lowell Bailey. “His experience leading our development and IBU Cup programs has given him a strong understanding of the pathway required for long-term international success, and I’m excited to see him step into this role with the Women’s National Team.”
Beginning this season, the U.S. Biathlon National Team will once again operate with dedicated men’s and women’s head coaches, with Gibson and Men's National Team Head Coach Emil Bormetti working collaboratively alongside High Performance Director Lowell Bailey, Head Shooting Coach Matt Emmons, Head Development Coach Raleigh Goessling, and Head Physiology Coach Justin Wadsworth.
