Key Pillars of High Performance Program#
See the boxes below to learn more about the key programs and initiatives of our High Performance Program made possible by the generosity of our donors!
Shooting Performance Program
Donate Today, opens in a new tabThe incredible progress and impact of our Shooting Performance Program has helped our athletes make huge improvements -- thanks in large part to the addition of 4x Olympian and 3x Olympic medalist (including one gold), Matt Emmons, as our dedicated shooting coach. In addition to coaching from Matt, the data collected by the Neuromuscular Biomechanics Lab at Montana State University has provided cutting-edge research on shooting plate dynamics, weight distribution, and rifle efficiency. The results are clear: our athletes are shooting better and more consistently than ever before and we plan to continue this upward trajectory!
Performance Optimization: MSU Neuromuscular Biomechanics Lab & Archinisis
Donate Today!, opens in a new tabMontana State University's Neuromuscular Biomechanics Lab has worked with U.S. Biathlon for nearly three years, delivering invaluable performance and technique data. Through physiological testing to determine training zones and efficiency, and biomechanical assessments to pinpoint areas for improvement in ski technique, the lab is continuously finding ways to improve athletes' physiology and overall performance.
Over the past year, U.S. Biathlon has expanded its use of Archinisis, a performance analysis tool that provides critical technical data through a small chip worn on the athlete’s upper back. This chip, equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and GPS, tracks speed and analyzes key elements of technique, such as power output, cycle rate, and cycle length. The data helps coaches assess athletes' pacing, technique, and race tactics.
Athlete Health and Wellness
Donate Today!, opens in a new tabTeam doctors Brett Toresdahl, Sam Stuek, and Gevvie Stone, and team athletic trainer and medical coordinator Annika Pasch, all play a vital role in injury prevention, recovery, and overall wellness. Their expertise and commitment ensure our athletes can train consistently, recover fully, and compete at their best throughout the season.
Ski Service
Donate Today!, opens in a new tabU.S. Biathlon's ski service team, the Wax Cowboys, work tirelessly behind the scenes. U.S. Biathlon High Performance Director, Lowell Bailey said it best, "Ski service is the processes behind getting an athlete to the start line with a competitive pair of skis. It is one of the most important parts of our team. We can have the most talented athletes in the world, coached optimally, in peak shape; but if they arrive to the race without competitive skis, they may as well have stayed home."
