USBA May Training Camp - Lake Placid

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (May 19, 2022) - It may be six months until the start of the 2022-23 IBU season, but the U.S. Biathlon began its preparations in earnest May 9-16 with a successful  training camp in Lake Placid. Eight athletes took part in the weeklong camp designed to kickoff the summer preparation season.

The camp took full advantage of the recent upgrades to the facilities at Mount Van Hoevenberg including the new 30-point biathlon range that was unveiled last year, where the team can shoot together rather than splitting up between smaller ranges. The Lake Placid Olympic & Paralympic Training Center provides an opportunity for the team to combine sports medicine, strength and conditioning, workout facilities including a ski treadmill plus room and board all in one place.

“There’s just no better place to start our national team training year than at Lake Placid,” said U.S. Biathlon High Performance Director Lowell Bailey. “The Lake Placid training center continues to be a pivotal piece of our training plan.”

Athletes participating in the camp included women’s team members Maxime Germaine, Deedra Irwin, Chloe Levins and Joanne Reid, along with men’s team athletes Vincent Bonacci, Vasek Cervenka, Bjorn Westervelt and guest athlete Campbell Wright.

“The camp went extremely well,” said Bailey. “We are starting a new Olympic quad and that always means changes - both at the athlete and staff level. It was really great to see the new team structure in action and working well. I think the athletes had a really positive start to the new season.”

The team will be back in camp at Lake Placid beginning June 6.
