US Biathlon Announces Trimester 1 World Cup Roster
by Sara Studebaker-Hall
New Gloucester, ME - US Biathlon today announced the final spots for the first trimester IBU World Cup team. The 2022-23 IBU World Cup season starts Nov. 29 in Kontiolahti, Finland, and for the first time in recent history, the US Biathlon women’s team will toe the line with five starters. Start spots are determined by Nations Cup ranking, with the top-10 teams allowed five start spots. In a combination of solid performances from the team last season and the disqualification of the Russian and Belarusian teams, the women moved into the top-10 to secure five spots for the 2022-23 season.
“Five [start spots] is historic,” said US National Team Coach, Armin Auchentaller. “Five like the number of targets to hit, five like the Olympic rings - we will go for it. I really hope all the women in the US get excited and are motivated by this program that continues to grow more and more successful. I’m really proud of all the women who helped make this possible.”
In addition to the five women and four men headed to Kontiolahti for the first IBU World Cup, four women and four men will compete in Idre, Sweden, for IBU Cup 2 (IBU Cup 1 in Sjusjoen, Norway was canceled due to lack of snow).
