National Championships in Fort Kent Conclude 2023-24 Season

by Sara Donatello

Athletes, coaches and spectators from the United States, Canada and Norway traveled to the northernmost point in Maine for the 2024 U.S. Biathlon National Championships March 22-24. Fort Kent Outdoor Center, gold level U.S. Biathlon club, played host to the annual three-day event which featured sprint, pursuit and relays for the seven athlete categories.

"I am really pleased with how the entire event came together," said Carl Theriault, Fort Kent Biathlon Coach and Club Leader. "Mother nature gave us a few challenges in the weeks leading up to the event, but she really cooperated in the days leading up to the event weekend and was kind to us on the scheduled race times to give us great skiing on natural snow! The team of volunteers lived up to our motto "The Little Town that Could" once again, and the support from U.S. Biathlon and the TD crew was great, all working together with the goal of a great U.S. Nationals."

The weekend saw 180 senior, junior, youth, U17, sitting, U13/U15 and masters athletes converge on Fort Kent, Maine hoping to claim one, or more, of the medals up for grabs. Fort Kent Outdoor Center staff and volunteers delivered yet another U.S. National Championships full of fun and excitement. In addition to the racing, the University of Maine at Fort Kent hosted participants for a banquet with dinner, athlete raffles, a silent auction and sprint and pursuit awards for the top three athletes in each category.

"We appreciate all our guests that traveled from far and near and were especially grateful for our foreign guests from Canada and Norway," added Theriault. "The festive feel to the event was everywhere and it was evident that all were happy to enjoy the sunshine and move on to spring with their last races in a long season."
